Empire & Exile

  • Merton College (Ian Taylor Room) Merton Street Oxford, England, OX1 4JD United Kingdom (map)

Amita Mistry (University of Oxford) will be presenting her paper “Imperialism and the British Left: Redefining the Pax Britannica, 1918-1959”, demonstrating how geopolitical shifts, and the consequent changes in the threat of war impacted left-wing attitudes to imperialism in Britain.

Julie Partsch (University of Oxford) will be presenting her paper, “‘I’m a Londoner’: Exile Experiences of Children of Anti-Apartheid Activists across Lusaka, London, and Maputo” in which she will explore three key exile locations through their communities. Looking at their political roles in the South African struggle and their interactions with other sites of exile and global politics, she will examine these dynamics' role in the identity formation of children raised in exile.
